Are the penalties for driving without insurance too tough, not tough enough or right where they should be?
So many have this “I’m not going to get into an accident because I’m a safe driver”, forgetting about the fellow drivers who aren’t safe drivers.

If you get caught with no insurance, the cops should get to make you forfeit your wheels. If we can take property from druggies, why not idiots with no insurance, or no license.
Not tough enough – let them get in an accident with an another uninsured motorist. I had insurance and got hit by an uninsured – thank God I had my own insurance to cover SOME of my loss – not all – through no fault of my own.
They are getting there. The only change I would like to see would be that the vehicle could be impounded as soon as it is found to have been operated without insurance. As it stands now, we cannot impound the vehicle unless it has been involved in an accident. That and a cumulative fine structure with the ability to seize the vehicle on a 3rd offense. In Texas, we are implementing an info sharing system that will go live in February that will allow me to pull up behind a vehicle, run it’s tag, and know within seconds whether or not it is insured. The fines are in the correct range to start, I would just like for the teeth to be a little sharper for repeat offenders.
Not tough enough. It is not fair to those of us who actually pay for insurance- end of story!
Not tough enough, especially when you consider how being involved in an accident with an uninsured driver can ruin someone’s life.
Typically 25% of the cars I stop don’t have insurance or have BS insurance (where the driver goes to Mile High Flea market with his vehicle info and buys a year’s worth of “insurance cards” or buys insurance to get the card and then cancels it a week later).
Some folks laugh when I write them for no insurance because they know the fine is less than their insurance would cost, the charge will often be plead down or dropped.
I used to tow every car I came across that didn’t have valid insurance. However, as my Sgt doesn’t think it is a good use of my time (waiting 20 mins for the tow) and feels that it gives the public of “bad perception of how the public sees our department” I now only tow about a third of the none insured cars…
EDIT-KC its real simple don’t fricking drive if you can’t afford it..get the bus, walk, carpool, I don’t care, just don’t drive. Take a tiny bit of responsibilty of your own actions…BTW the rates are so high ‘cos those folks who do pay have to subsidize the scum that don’t…jeez
It depends on where you are. Once I was in Marietta Georgia and I was on my way to get insurance but was pulled over. In Marietta, if you are pulled over and found to not have insurance, you automatically go to jail no questions asked. If the cop would have followed me to the insurance place, I could have gotten it with no problem but no, I went to jail (for about two hours). Funny thing is, I had a switchblade knife in my pocket and they gave it back to me when I got out. Go figure. I believe that the law has become p u s s y wiped on all things but when they let thieves go and arrest me for no insurance when I was driving there to get it, it’s going a little too far.
Point blank, insurance needs to be made cheap enough so that EVERY driver can afford it!
A lot of people live in places where there are NO public transportation, not even a taxi, and maybe some people risk driving because they cannot afford the insurance, and have no one they can ask rides from.
If insurance was not so dang expensive, we would have less people without it! A combo of that, and everywhere at LEAST have a taxi if not both taxi and bus (and train!)
