DRIVING INSURANCE QUESTION FOR ONTARIO… Hopefully Someone Who Works In Insureance! Speeding Ticket Question.?

Ok so dec 2007 i got the speeding 50 over charge. In ontario its considered stunt driving. I just got convincted yesterday to a charge of 49 over and 4 demerit points. My lawyer informd me that my points get erased from my drivers abstract 2 years after the offence date. That will be this december.

My question is…

1. the insurance wont find out that i have this on my record unless they look at it right? How often do companies do this?

2. if i make it to december without my insurance going up, and my points get erased from my drivers abstract is there someway the insurance company can still find out and shoot my insurance up?

Thank you 10 easy points for best answer. Someone who works in insurance perferably.
No in ontario you accumulate points. I dont want to contact my insurance company becuase it will give them a heads up to look into my file. And i dont want that. In ontario your demerit points come off 2 years after the OFFENCE date. Not conviction.

  1. ravenjudge says:

    they look at it every renewal, and if the points actually come off, no worries, but check with your agent, which your lawyer is not, to verify that points COME OFF and not just stay on and don’t get counted after a certain time ( as is the situation in the US.) are you sure it’s 2 years after offence and not conviction date? may depend on the insurance company…

    1. Usually they request a copy of your Moving Violations Record annually, however this will vary from one company’s policy to another, so no one here can give you a guaranteed answer;

    2. Insurance companies do not care about points. Points are for determining if your license should be suspended and are not used in insurance. Insurers care about what you were convicted of. Speeding 49 over the limit is considered a serious conviction with most insurers, which is worse than a minor conviction (i.e. seat belt, speeding 10 over) but not as bad as a major conviction (careless driving, DUI, etc). Moving violations stay on your record for three years, so it’s not coming off until 2010. The insurer may not have checked your record last renewal, but there’s no guarantee they won’t in the future. Plus if you try and switch insurers they WILL check it for sure, so you’re stuck where you are.
