Driving without insurance, what’s the penalty ?
I have a few questions and would appreciate some honest answers, please.
1)
If i have a valid driver’s license and registration but no insurance and i get pulled over, what could happen ?
2)
If i drive a car with expired plates and no insurance, what can happen if i’m pulled over ?
Do the penalties vary by state or are they pretty standard ?
Please don’t post dumb answers. I know i shouldn’t be asking serious questions on yahoo answers but i really am asking some serious questions.
Thank you,

Insurances vary greatly by state, in Oregon I paid $30 a month for coverage that cost $125 a month in Arizona with the same company. If caught without insurance you can get a very hefty fine often time equal to 6 months worth of insurance, no plates and insurance and your car will probably be towed as well.
The penalty varies by city and by state.
In many places, if they find out you have no insurance they revoke your license until you get some.
In some places, if they catch you with no insurance they impound your car and arrest you.
If you have expired plates (a red flag to pull you over) and no insurance I can almost promise you that you are getting 2 tickets, and your car will be impounded.
Keep in mind if your car is impounded that you have to pay for the tow to the impound yard, and daily free for each day it’s there, and in most cases have to purchase insurance and get new plates before you can get it out.
Don’t drive without insurance. If you have expired plates, don’t drive with anything illegal in the car, or with a warrant.
Just driving with out insurance, depending on the state you live in, you could get arrested if pulled over same goes for the expired plates and no insurance and if you get lucky the office just tows your car and gives you a citation but it will be a hefty fine. Your car is gonna get towed regardless but whether or not you go to jail or just get cited is up to the cop that pulls you over.
The penalties vary by state, in NY the possible penalties would be:
1) Valid license and reg/no insurance. $8.00 per day fine from the first day without coverage. If caught on the road the car could be impounded. Not having insurance coverage would cause your license to be suspended, there would be a fee for reinstatement of your license.
2) Expired plates/no insurance valid license. Car would definitely be impounded! There would be a large fine for expired registration + $8.00 per day for no insurance. Your otherwise valid NY license would be suspended automatically for not having valid insurance.
No matter how much you have to pay for insurance … it’s cheaper than the fines, fees and surcharges for not having insurance. Pay up or park the car and turn in the plates!
I got a ticket for this and seat belt tickets so went to court, have to do 7 days community service, told the judge I didn’t have money to pay the tickets.
But I showed up in court with car insurance papers I had just gotten so that made things better.
however the real issue here is what could happen if you get into a car accident, you could be sued. How would you like to be sued for 50,000 dollars in civil court? and what would happen if that person wins?
